This by far was a great surprise. For a first release of a bunch of demosceners from france I was blown away and quite impressed. If you want new 3d guys this is the pack to get. It's fresh original and not boring. It was awesome for a 1st pack and indeed they are already right up there with the best I give the moonrise pack a 10 indeed but guys let me say one thing =) Naked chicks are ok but don't turn into ice. =)

Sprocket, I understand what you are getting at, but you might want to be a bit more careful with your wording. Remember, each of us has their own definition of art. I believe art is anything created by man not directly necessary to his physical existance.

By this definition, basket weaving, paper airplanes, and even hip hop music would all be art. A piece of feces would not be considered art because it was necessary to physical existance. Now if you finger painted with it, I suppose that would be a different story.

Well, to get back on topic, I loved all the pics in this pack. I even enjoyed viewing all the ones I've already seen in the demoscene.

Fine ARTWORK all around.

Nice, clean artwork. I can tell alot of work was put into ALL of the drawings. I'm mostly impressed with the quality of the artwork. Nothing was mediocre. Lots of tittys! I'm looking forward to seeing the next pack. I read in the info file that the group started in July and you guys released a pack 6 months later (hopefully we wont have to wait that long for another one :))

good job!

root88: I don't think sprocket was trying to say that those pics weren't Art, the way you're talking about. Surely it is a form of art. He puts "art" in quotations to mean something less literal and harder to define..

My dictionary has a few definitions for art.. the first is like what you're saying:
1. Human effort to imitate, supplement, alter, or counteract the work of nature.

Yes, it's all art. Personally I think dada proved that anything a person calls art is art.

Another definition goes like this:
3. High quality of conception or execution, as found in works of beauty; aesthetic value.

I think what spro is saying is that the execution is wonderful. What's being questioned is more this sort of vague idea of "conception". What is being conceived in this artwork?

This low/high art idea could be compared with pornography vs nude figures. Both are conceived with different intentions. One is a cheap grab at your senses, designed for maximum masturbatory effect. The other an exploration of the beauty or aesthetic qualities of the human form.

Leonardo's "Lots of titty's!" comment gives me the idea that some of the art in the pack was like that.. sort of cheap grabs at your attention (though not exactly porn). Certainly the Moonrise pack is no worse than most other groups in the scene in this regard... It's just the fact that if this group took their art past the typical low-art illustration mindset and added something more to it in their concepts, then WOW. This group would be absolutely amazing.

He's not getting at that much lice he's just saying these guys got a lot of potential that they don't have to draw tits and ass to get our attention. They did a good pack and it kicked ass and that's all that needs to be said, they can do great things besides drawing naked women and they should make it a point not to focus on this.

By Leo on Tuesday, January 5, 1999 - 09:57 am:

I don't think it was their intent to make a "titty-pack" to grab out attention. I'd assume that the alot artists just happened to draw some nude women, Which is totally fine. Artist have drawn nudity since the beginning of time (maybe we all just perverts! :)) I dunno, I think you can even take classes on art/nudity at a alot of schools.

I'm not exactly sure what you guys mean by the images being more of illustations than art. I realize sprocket wasn't say it wasn't art. Maybe he was talking about how alot of the images didn't go into depth. In fact alot of them didn't have backgrounds, personally I almost always put as much time into my background as I do the foreground.

Well, I can't really say anything bad about the pack I loved it. Here are some of my favs..

Boz-shoo.jpg - you gotta love this one, you can almost reach out and touch it!
Dp-pipes.jpg - Interesting abstact, good detail and smoothness.
Ma-yoryk.gif - Beautiful, if that was all freehand, its amazing
Ms-gamf.jpg - this is what I'm talking about going into depth, this guy is a great artist. I'd like to see him spend as much time on the background as in the foreground.
Ms-rf.jpg - ""
Za-julia.gif - great attention to detail, I loved the way he optimized 128/256 colors.
Za-meli.gif - ""

bd: Not that we can really settle this without asking him ourselves, but I don't think that's what spro was saying at all. :)

I brought up that idea of showing tits as just kind of an example, and actually I wouldn't say that all the pics in the pack that show breasts are just attention getters, anyway..

The whole issue isn't about attention-getting, anyway.. I really wish I could explain this idea of "art" in quotations, but I can't, so I'm not gonna bother in the future. It's just sort of an intuition. Suffice it to say that it has absolutely nothing to do with how much time you spent working on a background. Get past this emphasis on technique and time spent with something.

It feels lame to describe it this way, but I think atom said it well when he mentioned he sort of judged a picture's value to him by whether he would hang it on his wall. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't hang a picture of a girl squeezing her breasts together on my wall, nor would I hang a picture of a disco dancing bear, even if they are excellently executed with attention to detail or use of palette. Maybe you would. In any case maybe this gives an example of the indescribable difference to me between these two poles of art.
