Moonrise

I honestly didn't think Moonrise
would release so soon again. But they're back, and they
quality is great. It's still filled with demoscene art,
lots of technique, but lack in "soul" as some
would say. Measuring packs "artistically", if
Moonrise is one end, HRg is in the other. I hope you're
getting my point. Last time most of us were blown away by
the great quality and forgot the "artistic" perspective
that we value so much, but this time I've calmed down a
bit. It's hard to point out any highlights, because everything
is very high quality. I'm reviewing this pack based more
on the skills, because that's probably what they're aiming
at, eye-candy for the shallow ones.
Splif is absolutely the dominating
artist. Everything he draws is so smooth, and are pretty
interesting too. The logos have original designs, catching
colors and are overall well done. The pic that caught my
eyes was the mermaid. The flow of the hair and texturing
of the tail are just awesome, they're so detailed.
Zaac pixel work is excellent.
Using only 256 colors and getting all the shades making
realistic pics is very hard, but Zaac pulls this off easily.
Most other work was average
demoscene art. Saying average sounds so degrading, but the
demoscene has a very high technical standard, so don't take
me wrong. Some pics that were didn't appeal to me were Antony's
kid and Der Punkt's cat. Not that they were bad at all,
but compared to the rest of the pack they didn't really
live up to the standards, either in technique or subject.
I'm still wondering about how
involved the members are. The group doesn't seem very tight,
like traditional artgroups, hanging in #groupname all day,
active mailinglists etc. Still not a single pic says Moonrise
in them.
