The idea of this new section is that to try to give more importance to the latest releases by introducing a new chart which doesn't consider stuffs (which are present in normal-charts) old more than a period fixed from us in nearly SIX MONTHS. It's only a little attempt to make something different, but we think that, in an eventual future modify of our voting-system, this is a good occasion to take in consideration and to verify some important aspects.... Is it so necessary to have "Actual Charts"?? or better " Are Charts already actual?? Select one of these charts: BEST ACTUAL TRACKMO BEST ACTUAL DENTRO BEST ACTUAL MUSICDISK and let us know what you think.... Welcome to another new section in this issue of THE CHARTS where you'll be able to read who (or what) has been the highest new entry ever, or has been for more consecutive months present in one of the charts, that is, who has got the CHARTS RECORDS. BEST NEW ENTRY: JETSET 1st BEST DEMO PACK of June'93 HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF VOTES: R.A.W. - 33,0% 1st BEST DISKMAG in July'93 MORE CONSECUTIVE ISSUES AT NUMBER 1: FACET/LEMON. R.A.W. Defekt is a new UK group formed by guys dissatisfied with their old groups. There are no new names to the scene, and in fact, there are a few guys who've been around quite a while. We were formed at the beginning of April just after the Destiny Conference when a couple of Destiny members were dissatisfied with the lack of decent productions. At the party, we had been talking to a couple of guys who were also a little (and a lot) disappointed with their current groups as well. We decided to form a new group with the idea of getting the UK recognised as a good scene country again (how many REALLY good UK groups are there these days? Maybe 5 maximum?). Starting off as the demo-division for ASYLUM UK, we released our first intro (called MOOO). A month or two later, ASYLUM died and we became a stand alone group with a handful of boards. Members-list is now: #2TANGO #1 - Organiser/Swapper #2AQUAFRESH #1 - Musician #2BASSLINE #1 - Musician #2HYDLIDE #1 - Musician #2RIFF KID #1 - Musician #2GIZ #1 - Artist #2GUMBY #1 - Artist & ANSI Artist #2SCHITZO #1 - Coder & Artist #2CASE #1 - Coder & Musician #2KOTUS #1 - Coder #2QUADREX #1 - Coder #2A.n.F. #1 - Sysop & ANSI Artist #2MEAT CLEEVER#1 - Sysop #2STAB #1 - Sysop #2AL-CAPONE #1 - Modemtrader #2CANDYMAN #1 - Modemtrader #2HUARACHE #1 - Modemtrader #2WAR #1 - Modemtrader What do we have planned for release? We have a 1-disk musicdisk called #3AUDIO VIOLATION#1 hopefully to be finished in the next couple of weeks and a couple of small intros and perhaps a trackmo? We are always on the lookout for more talented guys to join, especially coders, GFX artists and GOOD traders. Don't hesitate to contact us, but please remember we only want the good ones! I sold my lovely Amiga 500, and bought an A1200. I was afraid of loosing THE SCENE, if I would not upgrade to an A1200, because I could see, that alot of dudes on the scene, was upgrading for the A1200. Many programs was already developed when I bought my A1200, so I felt, and still feel, that it was the right decision to make. Well, I was still afraid of, that alot of my old stuff would not work on the A1200. But that was FORTUNATELY -NOT- the case! I have tried sum of my old stuff, and sum up2date stuff. I've made a list of what work, on the A1200. Things which worked by the Original chip emulation, the ECS emulation, OR the AGA chipset. The column with "Works Ok" refers to demos/programs which runs for a while, and then crashes. Some of them dont crash, but run with the speed of the 68020 processor (and that looks FUNNY!.. and smoothly!), OR there is graphic or sound bugs.. Especially graphic bugs! There is also a few LOADER bugs, but sometimes that may be fixed by using the Original Chip Set emulation (by using the Amiga Early Startup..) Well, hang on to check out "my discoveries": #2WORKS: #1 Triflex: Xtrax Sanity: World of C= Boulderdash Ports Of Call Sanity: Interference Flashback Pinball Fantasies Historyline Transartica Simcity Simearth Civilization Wheen World Class Leaderboard AMOS V1.3 AMOS Pro. Under the "WORKS" column I could also add most of the multitask/workbench programs, such as Directory Opus, Deluxe Paint IV (AGA), T.A.D., Imagine, Real 3D, All Wordprocessors (Final Copy 2, Wordperfect, Interword, etc.), VistaPro, Scenery Maker, Desktop Video and DTP programs etc. etc. So, infact are the most used programs and beloved games available under A1200! Most of the new games and demos arriving in these days, are compatible with the A1200 (Especially Sanity demos.. Thanx!!), and thats good. I really think we can expect alot from the demo scene after the release of the A1200! A new world, and alot of new possibilities are open now! Commodore had to make this move, also to compete with all the fucking consoles. But this is also (in my opinion), another move against the PC's!! I think that the A1200 concept has already developed quite fast, and many groups are already working on A500/A1200 demos.. this is great! I don't think that the apperance of the A1200 will destroy the Amiga scene. When KS 1.3 appeared, it didn't destroy the scene.. when OS2.0 came, it didn't destroy the scene.. people upgraded! Now is OS3.0 here, with sum advantages. By the time, will people upgrade, but there will still be software for those who dont.. The scene is not split up in two because of the A1200.. I still swap with my A500 contacts. I have to live with that sum of the stuff I receive does not work (yet). But I can live with that, as long as my favor programs works.. Also, the speed of the new A1200 is great. 14 Mhz.. faster disk access.. the new gfx resolutions.. the PCMCIA slot.. the internal HD (if u want a HD).. it's cool I think... I dunno if anybody else have an opinion on this. This is just mine, and i'm not steady or anything like that. This is just the way I feel, and think about the nowaday Amiga scene.. I think it's great!!! #3 680XX CONVENTION '93 - SPECIAL #1 #2PARADIGMA by COMPLEX#1 After the good EQUIPOSE, COMPLEX strikes back with another long one part demo, and also this one needs 1MB of Chip-memory in order to run. This production features a few but really good effects, as a stunning TV-box, a 3d world and a pencil vector, all coded by the CRASH and ARGON duo. The good music by JUGI and two great pictures by NOOGMAN perfectly fit in this demo and surely helped in making PARADIGMA a really good production. Anyway, we hope that they will not continue this tradition of producing demos that need 1MB of Chipmem because they cut out a big part of the Amiga users, at this point it would be better if they started producing demos for AGA machines only. #2SUBTLE SHADES by NUANCE#1 This trackmo features some very nice effects as a double dot-tunnel and a bitmap zoomer/rotator. The design is quite good, and this perhaps makes the demo reach a higher quality. There are a couple of not-so-bad pictures by ABSTRACT and a tune that doesn't fit the demo too much, but good indeed. If you keep the mouse and joystick buttons while booting, you will be able to watch a cool hidden tunnel. #2THE SAMURAI by ALCATRAZ #1 This 45K intro from ALCATRAZ won the third prize in the demo compo. It doesn't offer anything new: an average design, some good but too-long-on-the-screen effects and a 55 FRAMES animation of a Samurai. Evidently, there was not much to compete with. #2SOMETHING ABOUT SILENTS MAKES ME SICK by SENSELESS DEZAJN of SILENTS#1 A long name for a not so long production from this 'subgroup' of THE SILENTS. This one file demo doesn't feature outstanding effects, anyway it is funny to look at, also for the 'particular' design of these guys. Some good examples of CHEVRON's work, and also a tune by MARILLION, make this demo enjoyable but surely not a masterpiece. #3 AGA REVIEWS #1 #2NOP AGA by MUFF BUSTERS #1 This demo was released at the FACES-HEADWAY party in Hungary, and as many of you may have already understand it is made to work only on AGA machines. A1200 is the only way to keep the scene alive -they say- and avoid its collapse. The demo itself doesn't offer anything special, just a few effects that were already made on A500, yet more powerful thanks to the more powerful computer. That's not much, but at least they are doing something. #2SMOOTH CRIMINAL issue 3 by DCS#1 Third issue for this 'different' mag, containing informations on how to make drugs, explosives etc. They have received a lot of critics for their work, but they decided to keep on it and continue producing this mag. The layout is quite good and friendly, but the most important part, the contents, cannot be judged, there will be people who like them, but also people who will really dislike them. #2GALEMANDS '93 - REVENGE OF KUGLEPOLEN INTRO by KEFRENS #1 This little AGA production from KEFRENS features some nice effects as a picture wrapped on a sphere and a 20000 dots-routine in 128 colors. The quality is high as in the previous productions from the forces of the pyramids but maybe this intro is too short to be considered really good. We are looking forward to see some KEFRENS demos that really show the force of the A1200. #2 ACTUAL CHARTS #1 By Posdnuos/Ram Jam It seems that most of scene dudes, or at least a big part of them, believe that now it's time to modify the charts-idea and the usual voting-system. The continual and succesful presence , almost in every chart, of the usual and already known 'names' seems be the the main reason of such a high decrease of the chart interest. The definitive solution (suggested from various parts) will be that to make the charts 'actual' by fixing a very short period in which you've to choose your favourite groups/demos/single. By choosing a short period, most of really old productions (which are present in the charts since a long time) will disappear, and in the same way there will be avoided the presence in 'single' charts of some guys which have been pretty inactive for a long time and inexplicably still find a place. Let me analyse this proposal in some main points: 1-Firstly, the choose of the lenght of the period is not so simple as it seems, because we have to consider that a production needs some time to get wide-spreaded, and that normally there isn't a so big number of great releases in a short time. After this we've to consider that it's always necessary for chart-makers some time to collect a good number of votes especially from guys which don't have a modem (of course if exist the opportunity to vote through modems). 2-If you fix a given period (for example 6 months) necessarily you must respect it but I think that there could be some problems also for chart-makers. They will have often doubts on the release-date of some demos or other stuff (at least those from unknown group)...don't you think? 3-Apart the fact that the introduction of this new system in some charts will be really difficult, I am not sure that all people will vote the 'best actual' especially in single charts... for example, there could be someone that vote for a guy which has been pretty lazy in that period, so that he don't deserves to be ranked... Have you to consider this vote? or what? Will be charts really actual in this way? Let me have some doubts.... Anyway, after some discussions we have decided to make a try by including an 'Actual Charts' section in our mag. It is only an attempt to give a demonstration of how it would be......but read it to make a your own idea. Send News, Adverts, Suggestions, Articles etc. to one of the following addresses: #2 POSDNUOS#1 Cristiano Micoli via G.D'Aragona, 12 66100 - Chieti Italy #2 ROCKETEER#1 Franco La Cioppa via Arniense, 156 66100 - Chieti Italy #2 SLAYER #1 By Rocketeer/Ram Jam First of all, a little introduction to this new section in THE CHARTS: every month in this short article we will say something about the people who have entered the 'hall of fame' of the scene, the people who 'made' the scene. We all hope that you readers will appreciate this initiative, as it is a chance to take a look back at the good old days, to recall these myths, maybe with more than a bit of melancholy, or to know them for the first time. Now let's start with the first issue of AMARCORD, in which we'll try to evoke noone other than SLAYER!! I bet that nearly all of you who are now reading this pages know who SLAYER was and still is today. Till some months ago, in some charts, you could also see his name among the best coders, and the name of the production who made him famous ranked among the best trackmos, MENTAL HANGOVER. The year was 1989 and the Amiga scene was made of intros, demos and some megademos so some guys had the idea to release a new kind of production: a demo on tracks. Those guys were the Finnish section of SCOOPEX, and their names should be well-known to every respectable Amiga freak: SLAYER, the coder, REWARD, the graphician and UNCLE TOM, the musician. Some will say: "Hey, but most of the megademos were already on tracks!". Yes, but they were just some intros put together on a disk and shown through a loader while what SLAYER and the others brought us was something really different, something that marked one of the most important moments of the whole history of the scene, it was a TRACKMO. Never since then, the SCOOPEX slogan "GENERATIONS AHEAD" has been more legitimate. MENTAL HANGOVER has been perhaps one of the coolest demos ever made, with many great effects (at least for that time), a few good graphics and a really weird tune, 'MADNESS TOOK ME' by UNCLE TOM, that really suited the whole thing. After this exploit, however, SLAYER didn't produce anything more of the same level, I just remember CHROMIUM, a demo with no coding at all. Anyway, on the scene, you don't need to be too productive to have success, just release a fabulous production and you'll never be forgotten. For this reason we have dedicated this first AMARCORD to SLAYER, because only beer makes it possible! Some time ago there were rumours about a possible comeback of SLAYER, with a new demo called WORLD OF VODKA. We have not seen that demo yet, and we strongly doubt that it will ever be released, but perhaps it's better this way. #3ASSEMBLY '93 SPECIAL#1 RESULTS: #2 DEMOS #1 1. Pygmy - Extension 2. Many people said that the last time at The Computer Crossroad they have been robbed of the first prize, given to a demo that wasn't too bad but that didn't deserve it. This time the situation was different because the first prize was awarded to a demo that surely deserved to win: EXTENSION by Pygmy Projects. The main and only part of which this demo consists is a long animation that shows a guy walking around in some places. While the animation is showed, you can listen to a rather good music by PAPA SMURF. The aspect that makes this demo arise from the mass is that the animation is 29MB long! and was crunched to one disk only with a cruncher coded by DR.SKULL. Anyway, this time, only one routine, although good, wasn't enough to win a party. #2ROMANTIC DEMO by MELON DEZIGN#1 3rd place at the ASSEMBLY '93 for the latest crazy production by BANNASOFT and co. There aren't effects in this demo, just some digitized pictures from Beverly Hills 90210, a spectacular logo by the HOF-MACK-WALT trio (check the Logo of the Month article for more about this) and a tune performed and sang by BANNASOFT himself. As always in MELON productions, the main part is the design, yet in this demo they have decided to introduce to the world a new kind of MELONstration, featuring the new Romantic design. Will the scene like this new MELON-style?? If we judge from the 3rd place they got, the answer is yes, of course! And we can bet that in the near future there will be many imitations, although MELON doesn't accept any. #2AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL by VECTRA#1 After the STOP FASCISM demo by ALCATRAZ/INTERACTIVE, here comes an information demo for AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL. Besides the message contained in this production, that is for sure good, I would like to point out that also the quality of the demo is high, with few but nice effects, separated by some digi-pics taken from AMNESTY. VECTRA guys have got a design of their own, not influenced by anyone, and we wish they will be more productive and hit the scene with a bigger production, hopefully A1200 compatible. #2HYSTERIA by ANALOGY #1 A two disks trackmo from this quite unknown group and a 5th place in the demo-compo, not bad! This production could have been much better if they just left out some effects that surely weren't worth including. Anyway, there are some parts that are really cool, as the various tunnel effects, and also a good techno part on the second disk. A demo just above the average that allows to hope in a brighter future from ANALOGY. #340k INTROS - REVIEWS#1 #2STELLAR #1 Look in the 'Intro of the Month section for this one. #2VIRTUAL DREAMS (NAGUAL)#1 This new short product from Virtual Dreams comes with a not so good design but with really impressive routines like the morphing-face and the Ham-zooming. We found a little bug (?)...if you press the left mousebutton when there is some texts on the screen, the next effect will not work... #2CARILLION'N'CYBERIAD (PLASTIC MESSIAH)#1 "Full-screen Ham-bitmaps" zooming and rotating are the main features of this really short product. #2TSUNAMI AND DEAN (CYBER DANCE)#1 As always Tsunami managed to do some really cool routines and as we've expected this intro is another demonstration of his great coding abilities. Zooming, bitmap rotating and above all a full-screen 7296 dots-tunnel that confirms the high-level of his dots-routines. #2MOVEMENT #1 Only the 5th place for this well-designed intro which has got few but really good effects. There is a nice cannon-animation from Motion of Balance while the "Mario theme" music is by Reflex. #2 A SHORT STORY A MONTH #1 By Macno/Abnormalia In cooperation with The Charts' editors I have the occasion of commenting and re-publishing some of the short stories I wrote in the past. I find this a funny (especially for me) occasion to play the author, the writer and the critician at the same time. The aim of this regular section is to make a little break of the scene talks we all seem to like so much. Here you just can find a short story that can relax (?) your mind for a while plus, in order to give more substance to my collaboration with The Charts, some comments I received about it and my own personal opinions about the whole text. For this first time I strongly want to begin with a story I considered for a long time my best one. It was written in moments of latent sadness and it was published in the second issue of Scene Lyrics. I have never tried to change its words because I thought that I couldn't grasp the same mental status I had while writing it. I happened often, while facing the monitor in a autumnal night, listening a sad music, to write despressing and depressed stories of common life. Passed the idealistic and romantic life views of my teenage years, I started to see everything in the most materialistic way and somehow with a detached and cold spirit. I thought (and think) that I was just the result of influences of various nature, that there wasn't anything really mine in me, that there was no difference between me and the mass. Actually the idea of suicide has never crossed my mind, the following story is just the exaggerate and emphatized mirror of moments of depression: not believing in any life-after-death I don't see why I should interrupt this one, which is the only thing I can be more or less sure to have. An english pal of mine commented "The Train" with these words: "It's brilliant. I wish so hard that it was me who had written that as I would feel really happy with such work. ... The way you described the scenes made the story seem alive as if it was a true thing experienced by a true being" The same Posdnuos, one of your favourite Charts editor, commented it many months ago in this way: "It's disconcerting the idea of a suicide in a situation of evident lucidity, but the story, thanks also to an accurate description of the main character feelings, manages to make it credible." A female non computer related pal, wrote: "I found it a bit sad, it was so common, so daily, I would say that it was about the thoughts of the people who live a normal every-day life, nothing new, nothing exciting only the same every day." Personally I still consider this story worth a reading and for a long time I thought I couldn't write it in a better way. Just excuse my arrogance. Reading it now anyway I wasn't particularly impressed, and this may be another sign of arrogance, but I often happen to dislike what I liked in the past. THE TRAIN The train is coming. I listen its far sound, it has always a certain appeal, you hear it growing in intensity until its whistle cuts the air and its body runs in front of you, so fast that you can't see the faces inside its windows. They are running towards new places, new stories, new experiences. Everybody in that train has a task, a point to reach, the train brings them to their realization. And I stay here, near the railway line, among the snow in the middle of a large and dull field. The train is coming, I hear its far sound, I feel the breathes of the passengers, I imagine their thoughts, their hopes, their excitement for life. And I stay here, waiting for it, ready to take it to leave this world. What will my friends and relatives think of my suicide? I will leave desperation for two days, sorrow for a week and just some sad thoughts for a month. Nothing so terrible, the next month I won't be anything more than a dusty tombstone. And there are the good points. I will not be so bored of my life. There should be always good reasons to suicide. Desperation should be the first spring. I am not desperate, I wish I were, but I am not, I can't even feel something strong in my life. It's all so plain, boring, common. This is the real pain. I have everything a common man can have but I am bored. Life is just a long sequence of boring days, always the same, they never change. I have lived enough of them, there is no reason to go on. I've always thought that suicide is a stupid act. It's a sign of weakness, it's a sin against the ones who love you. But I didn't know, I didn't realize that my life was just a useless worm, crawling in the mud of the common things. The worm has become longer and longer but all its parts are equal and all the new parts will be like the first ones. I have seen enough of it, I have examined it, now I can crush it. The train is coming, the life of the passengers will change for a while, they will have something to tell to their friend, a man has run under the train, there was so much blood, it was terrible, we have had two hours of delay. Yes, for the society my life costs two hours of an intercity train delay. Nothing so expensive, there is no reason to complain. No, this is not a emotive decision. I have thought about it, I have decided after days and days considering pros and cons. This is only the natural solution of a logic thought. There is nothing romantic in my suicide, there are not sentimental, emotive or affective reasons. It is something logic, rational, scientific. The right conclusion. The train is coming, nearer and nearer. Now it's something big, its iron body comes with a menacing grin to bring me to salvation. I don't fear it, its whistle is like the sweet call of a siren. How many seconds have I? Three. Two. I see the interrogative and worried eyes of the railway man, he is seeing a middle aged man with a sad smile very near to the binaries, it is dangerous to stay so near the railroad he should think, his hand activates the whistle as to catch away a doubt that is raising in his mind. The whistle cuts the air, it hurts my ears it confounds with the acute and terrible noise of the engines, of the air caressing the train body, of the screeching wheels. That iron body is near, so near. My feet are ready to spring, I don't think about anything, I am considering distance and speed to calculate the best splatter effect. I want something spectacular at least. For this reason I have chosen the train, much better than a loop on the neck or barbiturics or gas. At least my death will be something worth attention, maybe even the television will show some parts of my body in evocative red lakes of blood and guts. Two. One. Be ready for the show of the day. The train is passing by. I am still here, on the edge of the railroad. It runs fast in front of me. My eyes are not seeing, my ears are not listening and my nose doesn't feel the burnt iron smell. Alive and senselesse. I haven't had the force. I had to imagine that, it was quite natural after all, in my days I have never dared to do something new, I have always waited for the seconds to slide on me, how could I find now the determination I have never had in my whole life? The train is going away. The worm will grow older and older, always the same, waiting for a placid death in an hospital bed. #2 Macno/Abnormalia #1 #2 CHEAT CHARTS #1 By Acbs/Ram Jam Well, this article was made to let all of you know what we think about this subject.Someone tried (and still tries) to cheat, but we check every VoteSheet, every letter, every envelope we get if the sender isn't one of our contacts. I saw (more than one time...) two equal letters, one containing the Votes of one guy, the other full of VoteSheets containing votes for that guy !!!!!!!!! ARGH.... If you want to cheat , at least do it in a fine way.. or maybe you are stupid...... So, we won't accept any 'COLLECTION' of VoteSheets, they won't be counted, except from our OFFICIAL VoteSheets Collectors (Just give a look to the VoteSheet itself...). If you want to become one of them, try to write at the following addy : P.O. BOX 23 I-07040 FERTILIA ITALY. If you are a kewl dude there won't be troubles...... It's stupid to have 200 voters per month and a chart cheated and not responding at the scene thoughts. It's better to have 130 Voters per month and a real Chart, according to what YOU think..... This is the reason why you won't see so much independent Voters, but only people well known around this little mother earth.... #2 CHIP-TUNE OF THE MONTH #1 Well, as you see we decided to introduce a new category which we think deserves to be considered in the 'best of the month' section. We had some doubts about the fact to add this mainly because there's already a 'best tune' award, but at last we done this choose because of three reasons : 1-Together with 'normal tunes', chip-songs have always been an alternative way to most of musicians to give their contribute to the scene products and we can't ignore the fact that nowadays there is a big number of musicians who compose only 'chippies'. 2-Products which needs 'shorties' (menus pack, intros, chip-mags) are becoming always more numerous. 3-The 40k intro-competitions held in most of parties nowadays make natural to release these with a chip-tune in it, because of the short size that they needed. The first 'chip tune' which was choosed from the Charts staff to be awarded with our prize is the one from #3Groo/CnCb#1 included in the #3 'Nagual intro'#1 by Virtual Dreams which have got the second place at the Assembly '93- 40k intro compo. It's a really simple tune with no particular effects or very hard work in it, but the melody is so tremendously nice.... It's something that catches up your attention or better...#2IT'S SOMETHING THAT CAPTURE YOUR MIND!#1 No...don't worry it will be not dangerous for your mind....it's only a chip-tune! I have listened it two days ago for about 10 minutes but i don't had any particolar reations......hmmm, maybe except one thing! I don't manage to stop my mouth which continually is whistling a strange melody....but it's not so important...or not? Maybe they weren't released those so called 'masterpieces' but we've admit that the overall quality was all the same really high and that we can be fully satisfied of the standard which have got these productions nowadays. Especially at the Assembly '93 there were really good releases and it's just from this party that we have choosed our favourite. Yes, you are right! The winning demo of the Assembly'93 is also that awarded with our prize....it's nothing else than the great #3 'Pygmy Projects'#1 trackmo called.....#3EXTENSION#1. Extension is a typical example how it's still possible to make a great demo without a innovative design, in fact there is no special connections between all parts but all the same the whole demo looks really nice because of the great coders'work which have managed to do few routines but at least original ones. Some of them as the 'shapecity' and the 'city lights' are really impressive but we can't forget also some other effects as the 'captured cube' or the 'Convex to Convex shadow' which are surely an important part of the good job done by the two coders, Coconut and Flame, in a demo so poor of any graphics, except an average boot-picture by Cenobit. The music by Jester fits perfectly the whole demo with a powerful first part in similar techno-style (the same as in the Chit Chat 10 intro) and a more relaxing second part which introduce the dot-city 'by night'. Well, that's all about this demo.. but maybe it could be interesting to point out as also this year the first prize in the 'Assembly' demo-competition went to a quite unknown finnish group. Last year, Reflect won with its "Sound Vision" but then they disappeared completely...and now Pygmy Projects... Are they a new reality in the scene ?!? or 'Extension' has been only an episode? Let's hope it isn't.... #3 DEMOS - REVIEWS #1 #2SAERE OEJNE by LEMON. #1 This one is the advertising dentro for 3D DEMO III that is currently under development. They say it's a 1 week production, and we must admit that the result is quite good, with some cool routines by HANNIBAL, pretty nice gfx by J,A.D.E and a good music by CAPRICORN. We are REALLY looking forward to the release of the third chapter of this apparently endless saga. Note: this demo works only on machines with at least 1MB of CHIP memory. #2A.S.S. by ESSENCE #1 First trackmo for this little (for number of members) german crew and another good production. They couldn't release it at any of the summer german parties because of various problems, and it's a shame for them because it had the potential to win. Besides the advanced routines coded by TOUCHSTONE and ROMAN, remarkable are the good graphics by GROO'n'RUFFERTO, trying to push back the accusations of being scanner-artists. The two musics by DASCON and WOTW are nothing special, for sure they have done better. A not-to-miss production, even if it doesn't work on A1200. #2 DISKMAGS REVIEWS #1 #2SCENE TALK issue 4 by SUBMISSION#1 The latest issue of this magazine comes with a quite long delay but I have to admit that they improved many aspects of their prouction making it more interesting to read. A big minus anyway for the charts section: even if they got a huge amount of voters, there are too many inattentions in the various charts, such as KICK OFF III and GOAL! among the best games. Although this lets the global opinion down more than a bit, we can say that this one is the best issue so far, but they still have a long way in front of them. #2SUICID issue 6 by TRSI#1 Another issue of one of the most criticized diskmagazines in the scene. The contents are of an average standard and they have included some of the articles that were already published in the last issue of SCENE LYRICS (note that last means really the LAST, as they say, there will not be a SCENE LYRICS anymore). The design is the same as the last issue, not good, but ZINKFLOID promises that in the next issue we'll see great changes due to the fact that the administration of SUICID is now in the hands of the TRSI guys, who are working to bring us a totally re-designed magazine. We can't wait. #2UPSTREAM issue 6 by BALANCE#1 Referring to charts, this should be the second best mag on the scene after RAW. Yet, if we check how many issues of MAGBOX/UPSTREAM have been released during this year and how many of RAW, we cannot not notice that what should be the best one is being released with a half-yearly cadence, while the other is released every two-three months, so, there is a lot of more work behind UPSTREAM and in spite of this they always succed in keeping their quality at high standards. Also this issue, the first after the join-up with FROGS, shows in fact how BALANCE is doing really a good work, introducing new ideas every month and making their mag always more and more interesting for the readers. There are, however, also some negative notes about UPSTREAM, as the presence of articles that someone would call 'pure shit' and of a bug in the SEARCH option (on my A500 1.2, when you select it, the system crashes) but these are nothing if compared with all the positive aspects of this mag. #2EUROCHARTS issue 20 by STATIC BYTES#1 Finally, after a long delay, we have been able to put our hands on the latest issue of the most famous and oldest charts on the whole scene. The design is changed but nothing important, and the number of voters is high but not as high as it could have been after all this time. All in all, a standard issue. #2CHIT CHAT issue 10 by MIRAGE#1 Long delay also for this message-box, and this is surely a bad thing, because there are many OLD messages, and if a production of this kind is not actual, it cannot be considered good. Anyway, the other aspects are really good, the layout is cool as always, and so is the music. They have also introduced a message-editor and we all hope that this will help them to be more punctual. #2GENERATION issue 10 by PLATIN#1 Unlike CHIT CHAT, this message and advertisement box is being released with an impressive punctuality every month and we have to say that PLATIN is really doing a good work with this production. Unlike CHIT CHAT, however, the layout isn't good and they should really improve it. We are waiting for the next issue, in which we should see many changes, also regarding the design. #2DEADLOCK 6 by DIMENSION X#1 6th issue for this English magazine that has always got some good ideas. The articles are quite good, even if most of them are not scene-related. Very interesting is the part in which the main-ed gathered some pieces about ghosts and that in every issue will be about a different subject. A good alternative to the 'big ones'. #2 DR.DoNOTHING #1 By Tango/Defekt/ASCII Unlimited He sleeps all day, only daring to venture into the binary world at night. He feels comfortable in the murky gloom inside his house. The forces of darkness surround him. So powerful and hated, yet unknown. He squinted at the screen, his glasses hardly helping his vision which had been worn down by many hours of staring at a screen. As he switched on his battered A500, the screen jumped to life and he was greeted with the familiar Workbench screen. He thanked his GVP hard drive and promptly loaded up his comms software. It took a few seconds.... He loaded the extensive phonebook with all details he had on the boards he visited. A "bleep" from his modem told him it was time. The line kicked into existance as he began his dialling for the night. The ringing drowned out his thoughts because all his concentration was on the screen in front. He dialled and dialled until the modem at the other end connected. The click as connection was made, the scream and applause as he logged on to the board. Typing in his username and password, he began to flick through the messages at a leisurely pace. The usual insults awaited him, because no-one could resist. The temptation to insult someone like him was simply something that could not be passed up. A new user had started leaving abusive mail to him. A slow smile passed over his face. What should he do to him? Delete his accont? Give him 1:1? PD access? The thoughts flicked through his mind but he simply replied in usual style and carried on. What did it matter that people hated him? All in his own country spurned him for what he was, and what he did. He took pride in his title of "Most Hated" because to him that was all there was to work for. Without that monicker, he was NOTHING. A claim to fame. It didn't bother him - the threats, the promises, the enemies he had made. Moments later, he was leeching from the board. He sat and let the gentle whirr of his hard drive carry him away. Thoughts of all the different groups he had cheated and robbed, the people he offended. It was almost a turn-on for him simply thinking about it. His power could get him on any board in the world. he knew that behind his back, people hated him, but some still feared him for what he could do. Format their boards? It was all too easy for him if someone denied him what he wanted. Traders weren't too bothered, but he could wipe their accounts on a hundred different boards a fraction of a second. he was despised and he knew it, and bathed in the evil light.... "Hang on a second, I'll be done in a minute." The words came from the sysop's mouth as an automatic reply to anything his parents said. He was too busy watching what the user was doing to worry about anything else. He had finished his download. Although he had been given DISABLED on this board, the sysop really felt that he hadn't done very much on it. The odd file uploaded here and there, but mainly downloads. There was a good chance that he was THE fastest board in the whole world, but even he was careful when dealing with this backstabber. A glance at his stats showed him that he'd now downloaded over 300 meg from his board. Uploads? The meg total was in 2 figures and this worried him. While still within his unofficial 4:1 ratio the uploads had all been done before the board got going. There was a good chance he couldn't upload anything that wasn't already on here. "Charles will you PLEASE hurry up!" "Okay mom, I'll just let this guy finish then I'll pack up." The thought of this guy phoning back later on made him shudder. What would he do? Without Chuck, there was a good chance he would start 'altering' the accounts and fucking things up for the other users. Resistance is useless.... The phrase kept coming back to mind every time he wandered along this train of thought. Delete his account? He'd simply use someone else's account or hack the board himself. The only way he could be stopped would be if all the scene groups boycotted this asshole and STOPPED him before he got out of control. The messages he left slagged off everyone of different ethnic groups and mixes. If it wasn't while, it wasn't right. He couldn't stand it. If he put an 'eall' on then he'd try to delete it before anyone else logged on, but he couldn't be there all the time and this guy would just keep trying. Laughing at people who stodd against him. Little solitary figures all alone simply because no-one had the balls to stop him. He sighed and wished he hadn't started this BBS. He wished that this user had never existed. He wished modems weren't what they were. He sighed and pressed F10. "Charl...." "....Coming mom, I've just finished with this guy." The /X screen blinked as the user was thrown off. He knew now that he had started the war, and it would be a long time until the end. #2 EDITORIAL #1 Yeah! After a little break we're finally back and quite proud to introduce to you this new issue that (as you probably have already noticed) has got a completely NEW code and design together with a couple of new ideas. Anyway we'll let you discover all the novelties by yourself (if you feel impatient you should read the NEW FEATURES article). We should consider this issue as a special one also because for the first time THE CHARTS tells you about two months of amiga scene. Of course all the BEST OF THE MONTH articles are this time referred to both July and August. Actually we are glad to see that some diskmags have noticed our presence... but it seems that not everyone has clearly understood that we're the only chart that is out every month... so they go on comparing our number of voters with that of others charts that are released every two months (if not delayed) and this isn't very nice. Luckily we have to register also a good amount of readers who have fully understood that and keep sending us their contribute. Well, we hope that you enjoy this issue, the next one will be out in mid October....so long! Yours, #2 Posdnuos & M.A.S.E.#1 #2 FUTURE CHARTS #1 By Posdnuos/Ram Jam The aim of this article is to do a little overview on some charts which are already present in our mag, and on some others which could find a place in future issues. Nowadays, the scene increase continually the number of its productions and surely together with the usual scene-releases (demos, intros, etc.) some new different ones have made their appearance. Maybe it's time that other categories (till now completely ignored) start to be ranked, while some others which have already got their chart are not so necessary after all. You can read here the opinions of THE CHARTS staff about this: We've got some doubts only about the presence of one chart which is already included in our mag, it is the... #3BEST UTILITY#1- Many guys wrote us saying that this chart is completely useless for two reasons: 1-It is senseless to compare so different tools such as X-copy and D-paint. A solution would be to make a chart for each kind of utility (e.g. best copiers, text-editors and so on.), obviously, we're not going to make this step. 2-It is not a pretty scene-related chart, or better, it's not a chart which contains scene products but in most of cases commercial ones. We quite agree with these sentences but before deleting this chart we like to know your opinion about this and above all......Which new chart we have to introduce?? Here is our opinions about some good charts which was suggested from you: #3BEST DESIGN#1- A good design isn't strictly connected to particular coding abilities or something else so that maybe this chart should give the chance to some groups (which make well-designed prods) to get an high place, but....Are you sure of this? Take a look at the actual most voted "best demo-groups"...Kefrens, Melon, Andromeda, Virtual Dreams, Lemon. all these make of the design a 'point of strength'... now that also Sanity with "Interference" has got a really nice design, you still think that 'best design' chart will be much different from "Best demo groups" or not?.... #3BEST SLIDESHOW#1- Surely it's a scene-related chart, but we have some doubts because of a not so high amount of slideshows released nowadays. Yes! Slideshows are an usual scene product but at last we don't like to fill this chart with 'pornos' slides only because there is not a good number of them which deserves to be ranked. #3BEST ARTICLE WRITER#1- Maybe it will be a real interesting chart which should give a 'push' for the increase of quality articles in most of mag....who knows? Well, we considered only someone but for sure there are some others which deserve to be considered....We think that it will be great if next time, when you send your votes to us, you should write on the votesheet or on a piece of paper which chart you like to see in the next issues.........the most voted chart will be included!!! What are you waiting for?? Make your choose!! #2 THE CHARTS needs your opinion...... #1 #2 HOW TO CONTRIBUTE #1 What do we want from you ? Of course all that could be necessary to complete our chart every month... #21-Votes:#1 you know, they are the most important thing for a chart so send as many votesheets as you can. #22-Adverts:#1 This is in your interest, we hope that you have read about the SCENE DIARY section so there is no reason not to contribute. Moreover, differently from other mags, they will not be deleted every month. The size is 19*38, please care about it because we don't want to waste our time in resizing wrong adverts. #23-News:#1 As you should have seen in the SCENE DIARY section, we are more likely to publish news from groups of which we've got some adverts, simply because this makes our section more complete in order to be a real diary. #24-Modules & Pics:#1 If you have some (good) of them and you think they could be useful for us, feel free to contribute, they will be welcome. Remember that is our intention to make THE CHARTS a one file production also in the future, so the modules shouldn't be longer than 130 Kbytes. #25-Suggestions:#1 Have you an interesting idea that you think would be great ? What are you waiting for ? Where should you send all these stuffs?? There is an addresses article somewhere... #2 HOW TO VOTE #1 So you wanna vote for THE CHARTS. You have made the right choice! Here are the rules: You are allowed to write as many preferences as you want, but it is forbidden to vote for yourself or for your group, and for any member or production of RAM JAM. Also in this issue, voting for THE CHARTS is easier: You can use the little voting-tool on this disk. It will save an Ascii file with your votes yet ready to be sent to us!!! (We made it just for the people out there who is too lazy to load a text-editor and keep typing all charts). Especially the presence in most of parties of 40k intro-competitions seems to have created a big stimulus for many groups to release them, and surely it's a good thing for the scene. Mainly, because the obligatory short length is becoming to everyone a sort of challenge to see who manage to include more cool routines in a so low amount of memory and that's really important but anyway, there are also some groups which just prefer to bet on a well-designed 'shortie' rather than follow this way. Obviously, the best thing would be that to include both (great code+design) to make a little masterpiece but this isn't so easy..... Well, the winning intro of this month, which is the #2'Bananamen'#1 intro from #2 Stellar#1 is a succesful attempt to combine an high-quality code with a nice design. It is another beatiful piece of art by this group which really seems to prefer the quality more than quantity. In fact the main feature is a "realtime zooming and rotating custom fractal" in 2bpl and we've to admit that the coder, Dweezil, managed to do a real impressive routine. Ok, at last we've to point out like at the Assembly'93 the finland scene has given a clear demonstration of what they are capable to do with only 40k because apart the Stellar intro in fact there were released a lot of good 'shorties'. #2SUGGESTIONS and LETTERS to THE EDITORS#1 Having recieved a good amount of letters, we have decided to start this section. It gives us the chance to answer some of the critics and suggestions we got and to make an overview of the scene taste. Let's see who has something to say: #2"Ram Jam Team! I might as well take this oppurtunity to ask you to keep up the excellent job you are doing on the charts! They are a breath of fresh air. How about some NEW charts and the demolition of old ones? Best Swapper? Everyone (me too!) can only vote for those you #2personally know are good and that means everybody votes for their own contacts! Therefore the more contacts you have means you hit number one, but SURELY just because you have 150 contacts it does not mean you are a BETTER swapper than one with just 30 does it? The Swapper charts are unfounded, try to twist the category to get a better viewpoint. NEW CATEGORIES. At this stage of the game you NEED to have: BEST ARTICLE WRITER and BEST ANSI ARTIST. These are essential and I ASSURE you that if you have these your votes will really shoot up! To be honest, your charts and the Top 20 #2are the ones I vote for. The Eurochart is just full of static bytes(!) and is boring!" KHUL/NERVE AXIS/ASCII UNLIMITED #1 TC: First of all, thanks for your letter. The BEST SWAPPER charts is the MORE FRIENDS chart... or : If I have 200 contacts I'm surely placed better than one guy with 30.... but this doesn't mean that I'm better than him. That's true, but for best Swapper is supposed to be also a CHART about the number of contacts..... I Remember TMB / SCOOPEX. He had really a lot of contacts and he was always at the best places in the CRUSADERS EUROCHART...... I was really glad when I got an answer to my letter, becoz I was swapping with the more voted swapper...... But He always sent me a Copied letter (maybe 200 copies a week), with two disks always containig Scoopex Packs... Yes, they were cool. BUT BORING ! So, I perfectly understand what you mean, but we can't delete that CHART !!! It's one of the most VOTED and also is a way to became famous without having a particular talent. Anyway your ideas to make a BEST ANSI GRAPHICIAN and BEST ARTICLE WRITER charts aren't that bad... We'll surely take them under consideration for the new issues....... Acbs / Ram Jam #2"This is Dalmak of Stellar around here somewhere. Well, actually I think your chart isn't too good but because your are not going to stop making it the only option left is to make it better, eh? Well, first comments about your chart... - Rename BEST DENTROS to Best One-File-Demos, now! For example Substance was released a long time before the name dentro was invented... It look so stuped when old good demos are called dentros... Or, in another hand, the new demos are demos too... - Drop BEST UTILITY! I don't understand what is the meaning of #2counting is CygnusED stilluseful or is #2XCopy better. Some things can't be ranked... - Add BEST INTROGROUPS! On Assembly '93 were released nearly 30 intros and only one of them was non-finnish... And yet Finland is little and unactive country. Intros are important part of scenereleases and when demos have 3 (dentro, trackmo, group) subjects one should be given to intros too... - BEST VIDEOGAME away! Or maybe not away but first include all necessary scene-related charts ( -> introgroup, slideshow) and then start making these "unnecessary" or maybe "non-scene" ones. I think that's about all from the chart subjects. Select with care the #2best tune-intro-demo etc... For #2example tune of the last month from #2Lizard King "was good because the vocals", as you said. Nothing against the artist himself but it was hard to understand the vocals and the tune wasn't too special either. You obviously haven't heard Bruno's Box 3 by Anarchy released nearly 3 years ago. Even that one has really good vocals and also good music..." DALMAK / STELLAR #1 TC:Well, thanks a lot for your suggestions and critics, they are welcome... About Best Dentro charts: Probably you have never seen our official voting-form or our voting-tool, because on these is cleary specified that with this chart you should vote the best "dentro or one-file demo". About the 'LizardKing tune': You're not right when you think that I don't have never heared the tune from Bruno's Box 3 which had good vocals. Usually, I listen to Bruno's tunes while writing some texts with my favourite text editor because I consider him one of best musicians of the scene. Simply, we think that the tune from LizardKing is an original one compared to Bruno's tune because it has used a "vocoder" for the vocal part which is at same time the 'main' and the 'melody' part of the whole tune. If you want know our opininon about some of the various charts suggested from you (and by others) read the article called "Future Charts". Posdnuos / Ram Jam #2"Here is ZINKFLOID/TRSI writing, the main-ed. of the SUICID mag! Well, I reached issue 5 (I think!) of THE CHARTS and there are some infos etc.. I have to give you! First of all I give you congratulations for THE CHARTS, they #2turned out to be quite fine and #2interesting charts. I got every issue #2and I was really negative after issue 1 because that one was just `crap`. But know you have fine and good ideas (especially the scene diary is `funky`!!) Keep up... Anyway there are some things which have to be corrected: First of all here is SUICID 6 by TRSI so you can make a review about it ( I hope you do not ignore it as other mags do it!) ISSUE 7 will be totally re-coded and re-designed by NAVY and BOONES, musics by VIRGILL, BLACKTHORNE and HELLRAZOR/all TRSI of course. You say in your mag that the current SUICID CODE is BELOW AVERAGE?? Why, this code is absolutely fast and very #2user friendly, also the code feat. 4 #2different musics to chose from what #2very less diskmags have! The font is #2ok..So why is the code below AVERAGE? #2I think the code does what we expect from it to do! And it really works fine! I utterly think that you mean the DESIGN is below average where I agree, but it will be completely changed by issue 7!! Ok, that`s it, a small note to THE RIPPER/NIGHTFALL: Hi friend, note that my handle is written like this:- ZINKFLOID!!! and not ZINKFLOYD - that`s totally false and has a different meaning in our language!" #1 TC: I apologize for the imprecision in the SUICID review, you are right about that: I meant design and wrote code. Anyway, I think that the code isn't so user-friendly as you say, and that there are some strange features: for example, why when I select the EXIT button the computer resets?? As far as I know, Commodore has put some keys to reset the computer, so what's the point? We are anxious to see the new design of SUICID and meanwhile we return your wishes for the mag. Rocketeer / Ram Jam So, since today, every critic, suggestion or question will be answered in this new section, just take a pen (or CED) and send now..... Bye bye The CHARTS staff #2 LOGO OF THE MONTH #1 This month's best logo is perhaps one of the best ever seen on Amiga, generated from the hands of an incredible trio of artists as HOF, MACK and WALT, gathered for the latest MELON DEZIGN production, the ROMANTIC demo. If we judge from the names of the authors, we should expect a really stunning logo...and that's what this is! Every single letter that forms the word MELON is a particular drawing: for example, the M has a woman-face behind, or the L is formed by the hands of a clock. Anyway, this logo has to be seen and admired in all his beatifulness because it's a real piece of art, and we are proud to award it with our prize. #2 LOOK WHO'S TALKING #1 By Christine De La Queen Now I would like to present to all of you, the childish scene people of all time! Or maybe that is just my own opinion. Anyway the following words are printed: Fuck, piss, dick, and you suck! (So... eh...Be aware!) Lets go on to the different statements, shall we..... Lets start with COMPLEX wich only has a simple statement, and it goes like this: - #2WE PISS ON YOU!#1 Which I ( "Lucky me" ) found in an advertisement. Very simple, yet an effective statement. It simply tells you to stay away! But maybe they mean it literally - Who knows?!?!? BE AWARE - IT'S RAINING ACID!!! When rating the statement from 1 ( No originality ) to 1O ( Great originality), I would probably give it a high 5! On to the next statement from another group, but more or less the same attitude. TEK always advertises in almost any mag, and one day my eyes strikes this "cool" line from the group: #2WE ARE TEK... AND YOU SUCK!#1 So they are TEK, and we all suck! Nice words TEK - They are absolutely brilliant. You guys must walk around with some humonguos cybernetic brains! By the way, it reminds me that I have to buy a new pair of soxs! Rate> 2 (It sucks TEK) Like many groups PARASITE also makes packs. But their packs are indeed very special, but only of one simple reason; The title of the pack! They call it: #2FUCK HER BRAINS OUT 4O#1 Believe it or not!! Then it makes me wonder, why not "his" instead of "her"?? But maybe it is because "his" brains are already fucked! Rate> 1O (The highest rate!!) Last but not least LEGEND. Here is the beginning of an advertisement> FOR THE VERY LATEST CONTACT YOUR PERSONAL PERVERT... #2PRIVATE DICK/LEGEND#1 Tsk-tsk! - What a pervert, he actually calls himself a private dick. "Cool" handle isn't it? But maybe he has his own special dick, that he doesn't share with just any guy that comes along - Who knows? Or maybe it really is an advertisement that sells "something"... Rate> 4 (Sorry DICK!) Make your own conclusion to this article. I sure don't have to do it for you! #2THE CHARTS issue 6#1 Editorial Credits Addresses How to Vote How to Contribute New Features List of Voters #2BEST OF THE MONTHS#1 Demo of the Month Intro of the Month Picture of the Month Logo of the Month Tune of the Month Chip-Tune of the Month Pippero of the Month #2STUFF ENOUGH#1 Monthly Thoughts Demos Diskmags Musicdisks Sun'n'Fun II Special Southern Party Special Assembly '93 Special Rendezvous '93 Special 680xx Convention Special S.I.H. July and August were hot as we expected and brought, I hope, the rest we need to restart a great computer-year. Maybe we were under the sun on the sea, or maybe we were dancing like the Spaceballs' masterpiece dancer and we did not care too much, but a lot of things happened in these months. Three bombs shocked everyone in Italy. The racist stream of violence is now all over the whole Europe. There's no country where at least one episode of intolerance did not happened. A terrible serie of murders painted Europeans' beaches of red blood. The news of the first of the three facts reached me in a really strange way. I was dancing in a disco, during my holidays, and while I was dancing there was a TV turned on just over the barman's head. The music was loud, and I did not care a bit about what was on on TV. But suddendly a special edition of the tv-news caught my eyes. I still could not listen to the journalist who was speaking on the TV, but I immediately understood that something wrong had happened. After a couple of minutes, I understood completely what the special edition was about. Strange feelings came to me. The loud music, the people dancing, the usual strange lights made me innatural feelings; just like what was seeing was not the reality. But the blood was real. And the pain and the sorrow too. It's so strange to realize, while you're having fun, that someone not so far from you is feeling the opposite emotions. A lot of moralists and pseudo- intellectuals call it 'cinism' of the new generation. But it's not cinism. After I had realized what had happened what I could do? I could start to cry, to scream and to bite my hands but I did not solve anything by this way of acting. The only thing I could was to think why... Why all these things happen and why this stream of violence is upsetting the whole Europe. It's not up to me to find a solution as there are a lot of people more involved in these hard fields of the human being but I could try to find my own answer. After the death of the main ideologies, those that were promising the way to find the last long happyness, those that showed you who was the good and who was the evil, those of the new, perfect and utopian society, another ideology was born. It's the ideology of the single. It's the ideology where Darwin's laws are the basis of the society; where the world is a private property of the strongest, where the weak have to disappear and leave place to the other predators. It's the ideology where politicians have not to drive people to live as good as possible, but to obtain as much power as possible, it does not matter in which way, legal or illegal. It's the ideology where the single is more important than the collective, where the selfish interests of one must be solved overwhelming the mass, by the violence and the murdering, throwing into the rubbish all the REAL moral values. This ideology is finding day after day more followers. Also our scene is getting invaded by these adepts. Think about the modem scene. Where if you are a novice, or you don't know something you're immediately called 'lamer', 'looser' and thrown out of the bbs. Where the word 'elite' is always repeated thousand of times, where everyone is ready to throw shit to the other just to get power, to collect credits, to have the '255'! But we must stop it! We must not to believe in this ideology! Why must work more for the whole scene than for the glory of our own group. If we learn or we do something really interesting and new, then let everybody knows what we have learnt, just to help the others. Next time, before spreading to the whole world latest Kefrens' trackmo let's spread latest Mad Elks' intro or latest Croatian demo. We will help some new and young scenes to grow and your contacts will be happy the same! 8) If we won't change our way of acting I think we'll keep on crying on the good old times, but this time we'll have the right to do it. #3 MUSIC DISK REVIEWS #1 #2MUSIC FOR THE LOST by ABYSS#1 A short intro introduce this two-disk production from Germany. The design is quite good with an Abyss logo on the left and a little pic (one for each tune) on the right side of the screen. Apart from this, there are two scrollers (the main and another which contains some informations about the module) and some little cubes jumping around. The tunes are all from Neurodancer and for sure he made a good job with most of them. There are are some kind of atmospheric songs and others with hard feelings which are worth to be listened especially for the high-quality samples used. #2RAVERANCE by CYCLONE#1 A stunning title picture from Alex introduce a quite good production from this unknown french crew. The disk contains only 3 tracks made by Llorca and they are some dance-techno tunes quite good but there is no code and graphics at all and we can't ignore this aspect. #2ART AND GO by IMPULSE#1 It's a unsuccesful attempt from this group to make a sort of hybrid production, which consists of musics and pics at same time. An Impulse logo on the right side together with three different menus (musics, texts, pics) are the main features of this different product. Unfortunately, it didn't manage to reach a satisfactory result mainly because of not so high level of the pictures and musics which are included in it. #2DELIRIUM by KRONICAL#1 A 'below the average' production from this Australian crew which features two different musics-menu (one for the normal tunes and another for some chippies) and a 'sadly' usual old design which really don't catches up your attention. It was nice to see that also a 'not so unknown scene' as the Australian one tries to give a little contribute or at least a sign of their presence but surely they have to improve a lot the quality of their products before reaching the high-standard of these days. #2 NEW FEATURES #1 As you will have noticed by now, also this issue of THE CHARTS has got some new features: a new code, new design, new gfx, new sections and also something more. Let's go in order...the new code is strictly bound to the new design/gfx by our graphician FLENDER: two parts, one for the mag and one for the charts. This because we have realized that THE CHARTS was from issue to issue transforming from a normal chart into something more complex like a mag-chart, so we thought it was better to divide the two parts, yet without changing the overall layout. Just press the right button and in a jiffy you'll pass from a part to another. About new sections: we have got a new co-editor, the one and only MACNO, the main-editor of ABNORMALIA. Every month here in THE CHARTS you'll find one of the best stories he wrote in the past, enriched with comments from the author himself or from other people. If you missed some, this is your chance to read it. Also in this issue: AMARCORD, where the legends of the scene can come back; CHIP-TUNE of the Month, the chip-tunes are among us; AGA CORNER , reviews of the latest stuffs for the new machines, and also something more. That was for the mag-part, now let's talk a bit about the one that gave the name to this production, the charts: also this part has been completely redesigned, although the icons are very similar to the old ones. Yet now, we have got the full overscan, and a revolutionary feature as the SELECTOR: many people asked us to do something new, and at last we did it, our first step on the hard way that leads out of the 'old' charts and towards a new conception of them. The SELECTOR gives you in every moment the possibility, by just pressing a button, to pass from the usual to the ACTUAL chart. For the moment, this option is restricted to the production charts only, as we found it difficult to decide wether a single is actual or not. Anyway, if you have any good idea about this just contact us and explain it. There are two more buttons on the SELECTOR: the 'D' button lets you enter the 'CHARTS RECORDS', where you can read who or what has been for more consecutive issues at the first place and similar things. The 'A' button should have introduced you to the most important and revolutionary part of this issue of THE CHARTS, unluckily the coder, M.A.S.E., in one of his always more frequent moments of fury caused by coding-problems, broke it, and then there wasn't enough time to fix it. That's all for this issue's new features, we hope that you'll like our work, or at least appreciate the fact that in 6 issues we changed the whole design 3 times. #2 PICTURE OF THE MONTH #1 July and August have been the real partytime of this year, and where there's a party, there is a graphic-compo, so, we surely cannot complain about the low amount of pictures this month, nor about the low-quality. Here we will say something about the best ones we've seen. The first picture we've selected is the one from JUGI of COMPLEX that once again proved to be not only a good musician but also a great graphician. The fantasy subject, a naked woman riding a flying dragon and the faboulous use of just 16 colors gave this picture a well deserved 2nd place at the ASSEMBLY gfx-competition. The only picture we've got from the RENDEZVOUS'93 was the one by FAIRFAX of ANDROMEDA, it represents a smoking old man. It is the winning picture from that party and we strongly doubt that someone could compete with a better picture, as this one is really good. The extreme close-up of the face of the old man shows how FAIRFAX, with his incredible attention to details, always succeds in making his pictures very realistic. Yet, the great picture by FAIRFAX wasn't the best one of the past two months, at least in our opinion, because the winning picture from the ASSEMBLY is a really stunning one, from another #3 COMPLEX#1 member: #3 HOTSHOT#1. The subject is clearly fantasy, and what makes this picture a winner is that it is full of particulars, from the light reflections on the car to the very detailed background. The naked woman on the left isn't of the same level as the other parts of the picture, but the author says it's only a preview, so we just hope he'll improve it, making this picture perfect. Meanwhile, we assign him our symbolic prize and hope it will contribute to motivate the artist to keep up the great work he's doing on Amiga. #2 PIPPERO OF THE MONTH #1 It's sad to say, but this month you will not be able to read any PIPPERO. I am sorry for all the fans of this section who every month await THE CHARTS just to know who's that guy that has been awarded with this prize (are there any???), but during the last two months, although many mags were released, I didn't find anything that was good enough to be awarded, so I just decided not to award anyone. Of course there is someone who wrote some bullshits, but not enough to win, and we cannot give away prizes, although symbolic, to people that don't deserve them. Maybe this is a sign, a sign of change, a sign of the improving quality of all the mags, of the disappearance of the so-called 'fill-ups'...or is it just a coincidence? Nobody knows. But YOU will know it. Next month. Here. Rocketeer / Ram Jam #3 RENDEZVOUS '93 - SPECIAL #1 The demo competition was cancelled because of too less competitors. #2 INTRO-COMPO #1 1. Nukem! / Base 2. Interphase / Andromeda #3INTROS - REVIEWS #1 #2NUKE'M by BASE #1 This intro won the first prize in the competition, a well deserved prize, also because there wasn't much concourse. There's not much to say about this production: some good dot-effects and a tune by HEATBEAT are the main parts of this little intro, and the whole is designed very well. #2SYMBIOSTRO by CADAVER#1 Just an average intro, with average code and average design. Wonder how they got the 2nd place. #2BLUE OYSTER by TALENT (AGA)#1 An AGA intro from this Norwegian crew, featuring a simple design and a very cool fractal effect, thanks to the power of the A1200. #3 SOMEWHERE IN HOLLAND PARTY - SPECIAL#1 #2 DEMO-COMPO #1 1. Fasion / ?????? 3. Inkey / T.F.A. #3 - REVIEWS - #1 #2INTERNAL EXILE by PERSEUS/INFOCORNER#1 This is the only demo we got from the WHITE LABEL party, and it's also the winner of the competition. These not very known guys have managed to put together a good production, with a nice design and a cool music by RAMON and OTIS. The two coders, BLOWFLY and OTIS again, have included some really good effects, although not very original in these days, as a rotating bitmap zoomer and an impressive routine with 10400 pixels. There's not much left to say about this demo, only that the graphics aren't too good (worse in some cases). A demo worth having in the diskbox, even if it doesn't work on A1200. #2 SCENE DIARY NOTES #1 For the second consecutive issue we have to point out some little notes for all of you readers who want or have already contributed to the SCENE DIARY with adverts+news. 1. Because of the totally changed design THE CHARTS has got, we had to resize the old adverts to the new size that is, and keep it in mind, 38*19. Unluckily, for some of them the resize wasn't possible, so we had to leave them out. So, if you don't see your advert on this issue, you have to send a new one of the right size. This is also for those of you who had their advert resized and don't like it anymore. We are very sorry for this, but that's it: we wanted to improve THE CHARTS and we did it in this way. It also took us a lot of time to resize the adverts. Try to understand and send a new one. 2. Some of the adverts by German guys were deleted, as stated in the last issue, because they didn't send us their new postcode. If you want to see your advert again in here, you must send a new one. 3. Another reason for which we deleted some adverts is that we got to know that the people who sent them weren't anymore in that group. If you have read the last issue of this mag, you should know it. If not........... 4. For all the people who don't swap with someone in RAM JAM, there is also another rule: you MUST let us know that you still exist at least every 3 months. This is just a way to control the flow of advertisements we get every month, and a little effort we ask you to do, also to keep this section up-to-date. #2 SOUTHERN PARTY COMPO RESULTS:#1 =============================== #3Demo:#1 1. Kustom / Darkness 3. 007 / 5th Generation -#3 REVIEWS#1 - #2FIM by DARKNESS #1 The winner of the demo competition at this Spanish party is a long one-file production, featuring a very good design and a cool music. There are no graphics except a good but not great picture of a naked woman. The demo doesn't contain lots of incredible effects, in fact most of them were already seen before. Yet, the design, together with some good 2d vector-animations, make this demo enjoyable and worth watching some more times. A really good production that surely deserved the first prize and that once again shows how good demos don't come only from center and northern Europe. The only negative aspect about this product is that it doesn't work on AGA machines, we hope that the coder will soon solve this problem. #2POSITIVE LOGIC by FIFTH GENERATION#1 The second placer of the compo isn't for sure a great demo, as it doesn't offer anything new and also lacks in design. Anyway, it is to appreciate the effort that this group put in this production, showing a lot of different and well coded effects, though quite old. The music isn't bad but the gfxs are inexisting. A just-above the average production but nothing more. #27 DAYS by SPANISH ARCHER of DARKNESS#1 Another one-file demo from DARKNESS and another good demo. Although it was 'mutilated' by a virus, this production has got very nice manga-anims and a cool design, together with a quite good music. If it wasn't for the virus we think it could have been a possible winner, but now it's only a little Spanish STATE OF THE ART. #3SUN'N'FUN CONFERENCE II COMPO RESULTS#1 ===================================== #2Demo:#1 1. PURE STYLE by ARISE 2. A MAZE IN by DIGITAL #2Gfx:#1 1. PEGASUS by ??? 2. ALPHA by GFX-TWINS/NUANCE 3. ORGASMATRON by BUCKLY/INFECT #2Music:#1 1. MICROFORCE / SANITY 2. VIRGILL / MASQUE 3. CHROMAG / DCS #3- REVIEWS - #1 #2PURE STYLE by ARISE#1 Not a big party, not many releases, but the few releases were quite good. This trackmo by the organizing group has been the winner of the demo-compo and I think that nobody could take off of their hands the prize. KYLE has decided to show everybody that he can handle everything: dots, vectors, bitmap effects are present in this production and the whole thing is well designed, with the usual ARISE style. The good graphics by FALCON and the cool music by TARON are the final touches to a production that, although it lacks something under the rhythm aspect, is to include among those demos that noone can miss. Well, actually someone will miss it, willing or not willing, the poor A1200 owners will not be able to run this production on their computers because it's not compatible. Too bad, KYLE! #2A MAZE IN by DIGITAL#1 This new production from the French section of DIGITAL is just another demonstration of their skills. Although it is very short, it contains some nice effects as a realtime zoomer and a 3d world plus a nice tune by CLAWZ to complete the work. We were not able to find the end part and we strongly doubt about its existence. A really cool production: let's see what they will bring us next, maybe at the SATURNE party? #2 TUNE OF THE MONTH#1 It's sure that if you compare from a technical side the quality of the actual Amiga songs with the old ones , there is no comparison at all...(Of course, except some masterpieces). Nowadays, every musician (or at least a big part of them) have "own samples" and a well-defined "style" and surely we can't avoid to consider this aspect as an important reason of the overall improvement which tunes have reached in the last months. By the way, the large variety of styles, which are present in today's Amiga tunes , is for sure one of the main reasons that every month makes our choose in this category harder than the others, because we've to admit that in this case there are always possibilities that our decision will be influenced by own "musical tastes".... Well, it's better to announce the winning tune of this month, which is from the musician number one (at least if you consider the "best musicians" chart) in fact, we decided to assign our prize to the tune by #2Jester/Sanity#1 called #2 "Basic Istinct"#1 which was included in the Chit Chat 10 intro. It's just another demonstration of the great technical abilities of this german musician who managed to make a tune which is a sort of "crossing" between powerful techno style and Jester's. Maybe this piece is just a drop in the ocean of Jester's masterpieces but we think it deserves at least to be considered and awarded with our prize. #2 VIRUSES - WHY DON'T PEOPLE CHECK #1 By Tango/Defekt/ASCII Unlimited Most magazines print a sob story of how a virus was sent to them and so it really pisses them off, but just stop and think for a minute. If you're going to contribute to this great magazine isn't it one of your responsibilities to make sure that the disk you're sending is ok? If one person sends a virus to a main-editor of a diskmag and it gets over all his articles for the next issue of that mag, then won't it be a waste? Hardly ANYONE (I'm sure there are a couple of wankers that do it on purpose) sends a virus deliberately, but accidents do happen, and the best way to stop them is to use something called a virus-killer! Come on people, it won't take you any time at all to sit down and check the disk you intend to submit to your fave mag (hint hint) so that nothing goes wrong. How long does it take to load up VirusZ? About 5 seconds? How long to check 10K of stuff? About 3 seconds? Even the most crazy of people must see the logic of sitting down and actually doing themselves a favour. If you get a reputation for being a bug-spreader then people won't want to know you simply because it could be bad for their disks. Even if you don't check regularly (try it every couple of weeks for disks you use a lot and maybe every couple of months for the stuff gathering dust that's only been used once or twice in the last millennia) it's always best to be on the safe side. I doubt that anyone on the scene can say "I've never had a virus". In fact, there's a good chance you've got one on one of disks at this very moment. In fact, I bet it's just sitting there waiting to breed as soon as you let it. The little bastard is just biding its time and when you let it.... W-H-A-M-!-!-!-! there go a couple more disks. It's a real nasty thing, so don't become a victim, stay clean and if you know someone who is having a problem with the suckers, then give them your advice instead of calling them a lame cunt. It happens to everyone sooner or later so lets stop it NOW! #2 ABH / Zenith #1 Acbs / Ram Jam #2 Ace / Devils #1 Adder / X-trade #2 Aliex / Independent #1 Amethist / Cyanide #2 Astron / Crash #1 Axel / Illusion #2 Backfire / Alchemy #1 Bad Karma / Balance #2 Bar / Ram Jam #1 Barbarian / Bronx #2 Bartman & Pink / Pyrodox #1 Bash 9 / Cywode #2 BigM / Hemoroids #1 Black Thunder / Silicon LTD. #2 Booger / Futura #1 Braindead / Independent #2 Brutus / Paradise #1 Buckly / Infect #2 Capt.
