i am having a better time doing ansi now than ever before. my art has become MY ART... rather than simple translations of poor constructs and ideas to the medium in an almost handicapped way.

so i say fuck the golden years... who cares about the good 'ol days... am i the only one here in this space? who doesnt care much about the bullshit of the past, cant say the so-called scene is worth shit these days, and is still pushing the envelope?

it seems that people have the most fun when they're getting good... and then they get good... and sit on a plateau.

some will say im too serious about ansi... but its important! it is art to me, not mere ansi... and art is important!

i dunno, what do people think about this?

i sort of agree with you there noot. :) altho i wouldn't give a fuck off to the goldyears of the ansi scene, i thought they were pretty.

but for reals, i think it'd be nice to move on, instead of sitting here with our thumbs up our asses goin "wow 95 was nice" we should be doing something for newbies a few years from now (assuming that the rapture doesn't end the ansi scene) goin "wow 99 rox'd!@#"

people are lazy and draw with no inspiration... or when they try 'inspired' stuff they just draw random shit and call it abstract, which can be just as bad... horrible people, do something!

yah, i think that abstract trend sorta died out though. people found out that their 45 minute half ass job wasn't cutting it, and that it actually takes TIME to do it.

that brings me to another point. people who call themselves "fontists". i mean there useta be REAL fontists, like mca, squiddy, pnakotic, and veks, who just fucked shit up with fonts. but then it's like people were too fuckin lazy to draw pics, so they just labeled them "fontists".

sure sure i'm not saying ALL fontists are shitty, or lazy. but most of 'em are. :)

the time i am spending on my so-called 'abstract' pieces is immense. each piece takes many times what any other style of ansi has ever costed me. its insane! but well worth it... im not drawing this bullshit 'lets throw 22 objects together and blend'.. its not even abstract. its representative of something... symbological, meaningful, carrying visual idioms and interesting parallels... you dont get that by drawing a face, a bird, a floating eye and a fish mashed together.

if you don't think that i fuck up shit with my fonts, then you've got problems... :)

i'm one of the laziest "font" artists, and i'm damn proud of it.

i usually spend a couple hours on a font however. even if it's small.

and speed isn't really the issue here. i realized that when konami was staying over at my place. he can draw a 200 line pic in basically a half an hour, and it looks good too :) when we were doing joints, he'd sit down for 15 minutes, draw a 50 line outline, even shade parts of it... i'd sit down for 45 minutes and add a finger or something. "yeah.. see that fingernail? that's what i added". he's crazy, but it's neat to watch him draw.

my art doesn't really mean anything. it has no meaning whatsoever. when i feel inspired to draw - i draw. most of the time when i start drawing i have no clear idea in my head what it's going to be, i just draw as i go. it just happens. i mostly draw fonts, it's not like i can say: "yeah, this piece depicts the suffering of the third world, and this one over here is a symbolic representation of the civil rights movement".

when i draw i express what i'm feeling at the time, which can't really be tied to anything in particular. well, ok, so some of my stuff is about something. that 'j' ansi. but i won't tell you what it is. if you want, you can analyze it or something.

you can usually tell when an artist put a lot of effort into an ansi. that's what counts the most. effort. even if it looks bad. unfortunately, i won't be reviewing like that, i have to comment on the "good"ness of the pack as well. :)
