Greets, thanks and final silly words 3:01 A lot of things have been added and changed since version 2.0. Forget it... Updated and new sections have been clearly marked. Read on. 1. Ab-intro-duction (UPDATED) Hello again you wanna-be-abductees! Let's skip the usual bullshit and go straight to the point... Date & time: 6-8th of June, 1997. The doors will open at 10:00 on Fri- day and close at 12:00 on Sunday. The detailed schedule is at the end of this file. Place: Oulun urheilutalo in Oulu, Finland. See the map of Oulu (OULU.GIF). 18 is the partyplace, 11 is the railway sta- tion and 13 is the bus station. Entrance fee: 100FIM (~20USD). Girls, foreigners and senior citizens :) get in for free! Features: The typical things. You know... A lot of room, electrici- ty, tables, showers, quiet sleeping halls, everything you need. A great PA system. a 24h/day bar with reasonable prices. Voting disks for both PC and Amiga. The counting of votes happens again on the big screen in real-time. Just great. A party network and access to the Internet. Cool. A lot of competitions. Both ordinary and special ones. And much much more. Perhaps even live music. 2. The usual stuff - absolutely no alcohol, drugs, smoking, vandalism or piracy inside the partyplace (sex is allowed, though) - you are not allowed to sell hardware, software or food without getting a permission from the main organizers - you are legally responsible for your actions - you pay what you break - the organizers have a right to remove a person from the partyplace and not to let him (or her) in again if the person has broken any of these rules or any Finnish or international laws - the organizers are pretty almighty 3. Competitions (UPDATED) We have made a decision to increase the number of competitions. The fol- lowing competitions will be held: Amiga demo and intro, PC demo and int- ro, music, graphics, raytracing and wild. This is the final decision. We have to say that the overall quality of competitions wasn't that high last year. Put a little more effort on your productions and you will re- warded. That is a promise. Trust us. Trust Abduction Organizing. The organizers will choose the jury members and the juries choose which productions will be seen and heard in the finals. The number of shown/ played entries will be 15-20 (or less if the quality or quantity of pro- ductions is low). And, please, don't run away when the jury members are being selected (you did that last year when the music jury members were chosen). By entering any competition at Abduction'97 you give us a permit to pub- lish your entry on CD-ROM. Top 3 in every category will receive royal- ties if the CD-ROM project will become reality. For the very same reason all filenames must be ISO-9660 standard compliant (only 8+3 characters and no special characters). The very same rule applies also to producti- ons made on Amiga. In demo, intro and wild competitions at least one of the authors must be present at the partyplace. In music, graphics and raytracing competiti- ons all the authors must be present at the partyplace. Of course the prizes are good. As always. The competition machines are: Intel Pentium 150MHz - MS-DOS 7.0 - 16MB RAM - GUS Max 1MB (SB Pro will be installed when (/if) needed) - 2MB VRAM PCI (S3) video card The competition machine has 580000 bytes of free conventional me- mory and it has many configurations (you choose one when submit- ting your entry). A1200/060 - Blizzard 1260 - 68060/50MHz - AmigaOS 3.1 - 2MB chip RAM + 16 MB fast RAM And here are the rules: PC demo - the maximum size of demo in an executable form is 4096 kilobytes - VESA 2.0 modes are allowed, but 100% VGA register compatible vi- deo mode(s) must be supported - pure animations are not allowed - demo must not save anything on the hard disk - demo must run without any kind of interaction (except for setup) - demo must work without sound / a sound card, too - one must be able to quit demo by pressing ESC - only the first 10 minutes of the demo will be shown PC intro - see the PC demo competition rules (the only difference is the size limit which is 64 kilobytes (65536 bytes) in PC intro com- petition) Amiga demo - the maximum size of demo in an executable form is 4096 kilobytes - demo must not save anything on the hard disk - pure animations are not allowed - demo must be harddisk-installable - demo must run without any kind of interaction (except for setup) - only the first 10 minutes of the demo will be shown - one must be able to quit demo by clicking the mouse Amiga intro - see the Amiga demo competition rules (the only difference is the size limit which is 64 kilobytes (65536 bytes) in Amiga intro competition) Graphics Note: the maximum number of colors was increased to 16.7 million. - the maximum resolution is 640x480, 16.7 million colors - any format supported by the most often used viewers will do - scanned, ripped or raytraced pictures are not allowed (neither are those which contain registered trademarks or logos - submit two versions of the picture (one with your signature, one without it) - only one picture from one artist - pictures will be shown on either Amiga or PC depending on the computer they were made on Music - both multichannel and 4-channel songs will compete in this cate- gory - 50% of the songs played in the finals will be 4-channel modules - all standard formats are allowed (such as S3M, XM, IT and MOD) - the maximum size of the song is 1024 kilobytes - the maximum number of channels is 32 - no MIDI songs - only one song from one artist - all modules will be played either on PC equipped with GUS (1 MB) or on Amiga depending on the computer they were made on - only the first 4 minutes of the song will be played Raytracing - the maximum resolution is 640x480, 16.7 million colors - any format supported by the most often used viewers will do - submit two versions of the picture (one with your signature, one without it) - only one picture from one artist - pictures will be shown on PC equipped with a true color video card - pictures which contain registered trademarks or logos are not allowed Wild - productions don't have to be video clips and they don't have to be submitted on VHS cassettes - we supply only the VCR (PAL) and PA system for you - you have to bring everything else you may need (computers, synthesizers and so on). However we have a lot of things at the partyplace and we may be able to help you if you ask us IN TIME - your production must not contain copyrighted or illegal material (as said before, both international and Finnish laws do apply at the partyplace) - your video cassettes will be returned - only one production from one group or person Minor changes are possible and we are entitled to make them (if found absolutely necessary or so). 4. Special features (UPDATED) Information about the special competitions will probably be released on our homepage (http://dot.tcm.hut.fi/abduction/) as soon as we know more about them. On the other hand, you don't actually need the information until you are at the partyplace - you like surprises, don't you? Well, at least Sony Playstation and anagram competitions will be held. A special prize will be given to the person (or a group of persons) with the coolest outfit. The Leningrad Cowboys And The Alexandrov Red Army Chorus And Dance En- semble will throw TWO gigs in Oulu (on Friday the 6th and Saturday the 7th)! No competitions will be held during the concert (at least on Fri- day; that's a promise), so go there and have some fun! Oulun lippupalve- lu sells 20000 tickets to both concerts - give the a call (08-3147200). The cheapest tickets cost 160 FIM. 5. Here is the planned schedule and its key events: Friday, 6th of June 10:00 The doors will open. Abduction'97 will begin. 17:00 The deadline for music competition. The early time is due to the huge number of music competition entries at Abduc- tion'96. Saturday, 7th of June 00:00 The first competitions will be held: music, graphics and raytracing (not necessarily in that order, though). Time for a tour in local nightclubs, perhaps. 14:00 Special competitions will be held. A possibility to test your demos and intros on the compe- tion machines. 18:00 The deadline for wild, demo and intro competitions. Perhaps more special competitions. Sunday, 8th of June 00:00 More competitions: wild, Amiga intro and demo, PC intro and demo (not necessarily in that order, though). 30-60 minutes time to vote and return the voting disks. The counting of votes (in real-time). The winners will be announced. Sleeping? 8:00 Re-runs. 12:00 All good things... Abduction'97 will be over. 6. Thanks to The University of Oulu and Oulun puhelinyhtio. More information about this feature will be on our web pages and the mailing- list very soon. Yes, the mailing-list is here again and you can join it by sending mail to abduction97-request@dot.tcm.hut.fi with "subscribe" in the body of message (subject field is ignored). The mailing-list is for important last-minute-got-to-know-it-information from the organizers; the people on it are the first ones to know if the competition rules or schedule change. Also, the Abduction files will be very soon available on our official FTP server (dot.tcm.hut.fi that is). 9.
