..:%That Was Quick :: 12/1/96 - 1/28/97
As many of you have already heard I am ending Acrylic Weekly,
and I am not giving it away to anybody. I know to many of you this
comes as a shock, but I'll try to explain my reasoning.
I was in my car two days ago and I was asking myself why I publish
a weekly magazine. I realized that I was not doing it to "benefit
the art scene" or "give back to the art scene" or any
bullshit like that, but for personal gain. I did Acrylic Weekly
to look good, for people to say "Hey Look! There's an original
idea! Way to go Sodium!" And while almost all of you might disagree,I
believe that a good portion of electronic magazines and text 'zines
are started for this reason. Either as something to kill time, or
something to make yourself look good.
Later that same night I again contemplated the idea of ending
Acrylic Weekly. I went through all the negatives first such
as the difficulty of maintaining an image, keeping the magazine
updated, hounding late managers, dealing with angry readers, and
time loss. The positives were that it made me look good and it made
people happy. Well I like to help people but it was costing me alot.
I spent constant time on Acrylic Weekly, and I barely have
enough time as it is between school, music, martial arts, and my
significant other. In addition I had taken on a task that I should
pratically be paid for. Then I asked myself, "Do I really want
to do this magazine?". I could not bring myself to say yes.
Many people wanted to takeover Acrylic Weekly. I read through
some letters but decided that there was no one I wanted to give
it too. It had been a solo project at first, then it became big
and took on a staff. But all the while it belonged to me. I didn't
want anyone changing the direction of the magazine or it's design.
This is a statement I SHOULD NOT have to explain to you.
It's my decision, and I made it. Just because Acrylic Weekly
is gone doesn't mean there is no hope for weekly magazines. Acrylic
Weekly has set the stage for others to follow, and I'd like
to see other people have a shot at their own thing rather then have
to work under the shadow of a previous supervisor. I just think
it's better this way.
So it's done, and I already hear rumors of a new weekly magazine
run by some people in #ansi to replace Acrylic Weekly. I'm
fine with that, I have no problem with someone else continuing my
basic idea. I'm sure that's what the guy who first started the MONTHLY
magazine said. It's okay with me, just as longas someone doesn't
try to revive Acrylic Weekly. That I won't tolerate.
I'd like to thank Spook for convincing me to make Acrylic
into a weekly magazine; Shrike for being a tremendous help
as Assistant Supervisor; Cthulu, Belial, Spear, and Schtroumpf
for sticking to it till the end; Magnatop and Ironghost for being
a great help; Empty for helping me with special tasks; and finally
the art scene for writing and drawing a large portion of what we
read in the magazine.
What am I going to do now? Well I joined the art scene to draw,
and that's what I'm going to do again. Im hooking up with Fire
(I don't think Acid will be pleased) and I'm going to try to start
tracking for 7YNIVf again.
